Viridian Joule, the Name of Volt's First Color

As you know by now, American manufacturer GM set up a contest to name the default color in which the production version of the Volt will be painted in. The color has now been chosen and, as soon as the Volt enters the California dealerships, you can go and order it in Viridian Joule.

We know, a bit hard to pronounce, so we'll let David Thomas, the name who thought of it, explain what we're the reasons which led to this name.

I looked at the photo of the Volt on the contest web site and thought it looked emerald in color, which led to jewel and then to an alternate yet appropriate play on that word – joule (a unit of electrical energy).

This was a fun way to engage Chevrolet and Volt enthusiasts by inviting them into the process and naming our lead color, and the name reflects the innovation of the Volt’s extended-range technology,” Maria Rohrer, Global Volt and Global Marketing Director at Chevrolet added. “When our Volt marketing materials arrive in dealerships, you’ll see “Viridian Joule” as the official name of the silver exterior with an emerald hue.”

As we told you earlier today, the Volt will be launched in late 2010 in California. The Volt will come powered by lithium-ion batteries which will give it a range of up to 40 miles without the use of the internal combustion engine. Pricing for the car has not yet been announced.
