Traffic in all major cities across the world is horrendous during rush hour, and this also applies to Seattle. But here, one woman is standing up for doing what’s right and she’s even willing to risk personal safety to get cars out of the bus-only lane.
A video posted to Twitter by 1176Luv, who apparently lives in New York City, hails this unnamed woman as a “true hero in Seattle.” The video has since gone viral, inspiring others to imitate her but also sparking negative reactions from motorists all across the country.

You can see the original video at the bottom of the page. It was shot on 6th and Olive and it shows the woman standing in the middle of the bus lane, so as to be able to shoo cars off it. It’s true, some drivers only roll past her and then return to the bus lane, but her efforts don’t go unnoticed by other people waiting for the bus, who applaud and cheer her on. Not one of them, though, joins her.

Since posting the video, 1176Luv has been flooded with negative comments from motorists all across the U.S., some of them downright hateful and offensive, others more reasonable. The user has deleted the former and, for some time, strove to respond to the latter, which mostly point out that, while a good thing, what the woman is doing is ultimately pointless as it has no long-term effect. For that to have happened, she should have called the police and tickets should have been given to all offending drivers.

As the video went viral, it also sparked an imitating frenzy. Tens of pedestrians armed with red flags stepped out for their daily commute and would every now and then stand in the bus lane to warn drivers to get off it. They also thanked the bus drivers for their work, which is oftentimes made more difficult by the actions of drivers of passenger vehicles. You can see that video too at the bottom of the page.

The original video also prompted a heated discussion on the hulkification of drivers and their inflated sense of entitlement, on one hand, and how one pedestrian’s random gesture (which could have been prompted by the desire to be Insta-famous) is ultimately a pebble in a pond, on the other. Said discussion is still raging on as we speak, with no definite conclusion in sight.
