If you’re in the metro Detroit area this weekend, don’t be surprised if you see hundreds of Dodge/SRT Vipers cruising Woodward or parading up I-75 at some point. Members of the Viper Owners Association (VOA) from across the country will be descending upon the Motor City to commemorate the Viper Homecoming that took place 20 years ago.
Kicking off tomorrow and lasting through Sunday, the VOA National Viper Event will draw an estimated 550 Vipers to the area for a weekend of events that stretches from Detroit to about 90 miles north to the city of Frankenmuth. Throughout the weekend, Viper owners will have unique access to Chrysler and SRT executives as well as numerous Chrysler facilities like the Walter P. Chrysler museum, the Chelsea Proving Grounds and the Conner Avenue production where Vipers have been hand built for almost 20 years, although the plant’s on-again, off-again production saga means that they won’t be able to see any Vipers rolling off the assembly line.

What should surely make up for this, some of the planned events include a riverboat dinner cruise, the chance to autocross the latest SRT lineup of vehicles and a visit to Chrysler’s proving grounds where they can take hot laps and drive their own cars around the track. And as if this isn’t enough, one person in attendance will have a 1 in 500 chance of winning a brand-new 2013 SRT Viper GTS Launch Edition.

This entire event is meant to celebrate the first-ever Viper Homecoming, which took place in 1994. Just two years after Viper production commenced, Dodge obviously knew how passionate Viper buyers were, and the automaker hosted the event that drew hundreds of Viper owners to Auburn Hills. Even today, the Dodge/SRT Viper is only 22 years old making it just a baby in the grand scheme of the automotive industry, but the passion of the car’s owners is still present probably ranking up there with more established cars like the Chevrolet Corvette and Porsche 911.
