Violent FWD Nurburgring Crashes Prove Nobody Is Safe

In a tragicomic fashion, there are drivers out there who believe the sheer front-wheel-drive nature of their cars will keep them safe while tackling the Nurburgring.
Well, many of these guys and gals account for an important part of the crashes that occur during the Touristenfahrten (tourist days) events and the piece of footage at the bottom of the page offers you plenty of examples of such accidents - we're dealing with a compilation of 2016 FWD 'Ring accidents and some of these are obviously more severe than others.

Sure, most drivers react better to understeer than they do when oversteer kicks in, but there are tons of ways in which FWD cars can bite those not knowing how to control them.

First of all, the more affordable nature of FWD machines means that many of the cars you'll see in the video below (obviously older models) don't come with ESP. Well, this makes room to that tricky lift-off oversteer, which usually hits when a driver panics and lifts mid-corner.

You'll also get to see ESP-fitted cars getting trashed on the Nordschleife, and this only comes to show that, no matter how good the electronics are, unreasonable entry speeds will lead to plow-through understeer.

The Green Hell didn't get its nickname for forgiving drivers who make mistakes, be they behind the wheel of FWD contraptions or not. In fact, the Renault Megane RS, which is the most affordable way into the 8-minute club, was the car featured in three similar rollover crashes that took place over the last twelve months or so (you can find more on the topic here, but beware, these accidents are not for the faint-hearted).

The best idea for maximizing your chances of avoiding accidents is to gradually dial things up and perhaps this 2016 Nurburgring guide may help with that.
