Toyota pickups are well known for their sturdiness, and many from the ’70s are still in use today. This 1976 example we’ve found on Bring a Trailer looks almost as new and comes with interesting features that make it a valuable partner during off-grid adventures.
The 1976 Toyota Chinook camper like this one we’ve found on Bring a Trailer benefitted from some critical improvements over the previous model year. Notably, the body was reinforced with a steel frame, and the upgraded chassis was built specifically for RV use. The spiced-up 2.2-liter 20R engine was also better for moving the heavy camper around. It didn’t set any land records but was one of the most economically available of its time.

The selling dealer acquired the Chinook in July 2022 in the same outstanding technical condition. Not many things need attention in the short term, and everything, including the camping equipment, works as advertised. The body is said to have been refinished in white with two-tone brown stripes in 2019. In 2017, the previous owner installed a leaf spring kit and replaced the shocks.

The cabin has been improved with bucket seats sourced from a Volvo S80 and an under-dash air conditioner. A backup camera was also installed, with a large screen that would shame many modern dashboards. Speaking of which, this Toyota also features a digital voltmeter and USB ports. The rear cabin includes an overhead sleeping area and a large bed, which extends to sleep two in comfort.

About that comfort, there’s a water heater connected to the 30-gallon (136 liters) that feeds the kitchen sink. A shower connects to the faucet and can be used indoors or outside with the included shower tent. A two-burner cooktop and an ice chest are also on offer, and the propane system looks recently overhauled. Solar panels and batteries keep everything powered nicely even when there’s no shore connection.

The Toyota Chinook camper is listed on Bring a Trailer with manufacturer’s literature and a clean Utah title. The highest bid at the time of writing is $6,500, with four days remaining. If you’re wondering, a similar rig sold earlier for a cool $9,450. You must admit that this would be an excellent price for such a great camper.
