Vietnam is a country that today matters little to nothing at all in the automotive industry. But, as does the global industry, that in the country is on the rise too, so it was only a matter of time until someone there decided to build a car or two.
Back in February, a company called VinFast set out to take on the big guns of the industry in Europe with two cars, and SUV and a sedan, which it plans to sell on the Old Continent. Both, designed by Pininfarina following a strange public-voting contest, will be making their entrance this fall at the Paris Motor Show.

On Monday, Vinfast decided to show the world the first images of the cars it created, complete with what will likely become the brand’s identity, featured on the front end of the two: a chrome V emblem at the centre of the grille for Vin and LED daytime running lights to create an F-motif for Fast.

Visually, both the yet unnamed sedan and the SUV present themselves as well-proportioned cars, but they wouldn’t really stand out in a crowd of siblings from other brands.

As said, the design of the car was voted upon by the Vietnamese public, following the twisted VinFast logic that the Vietnamese people should have a say in how cars to be sold in Europe must look. A practice which the company plans to expand to other future models as well.

Tight-lipped, the Vietnamese did not spill the beans on what exactly will power the cars they will be selling soon. VinFast claimed at one point it will be trying to source some German technology from BMW, but it’s unclear whether they managed to convince the Bavarians into lending a hand.

“We look forward to introducing our new brand and two new models in Paris,” said in a statement released in July James DeLuca, VinFast CEO.

“Our show stand will also prominently feature the best of Vietnam, demonstrating the passion and tenacity that we will bring to the global automotive stage.”
