VinFast All-Electric SUVs Begin Rolling off the Line in Vietnam

While the majority of consumers in their most important targeted market were deep in slumber, half a world away at its sprawling automotive manufacturing facility in Haiphong, Vietnam, VinFast Automotive delivered its first all-electric SUV on Saturday, September 10.

The first 100 production models of their VF8 and VF9 all-electric SUVs will be earmarked for the local market, but the real big fish lies overseas in the United States.

"The first batch of 5,000 VF8 units will be for U.S. and North American markets. Mass production will start from next week," VinFast's global chief executive Le Thi Thu Thuy told Reuters on the sidelines of a delivery ceremony at its plant in Vietnam's northern province of Haiphong.

Those vehicles are planned to begin their journey over the Pacific to North American shores in November and are expected to be delivered to awaiting customers in December.

With almost 65,000 firm orders globally to date, the company is going is plunging into the all-electric vehicle arena expecting to sell 750,000 all-electric vehicles by 2026. The Singapore-based company also has its sights set on manufacturing cars on American soil. The company reported in March that it plans on building a manufacturing facility in North Carolina with the capacity to produce 150,000 of its vehicles annually.

Purchasing a VinFast vehicle comes with a bit of a twist. In order to reduce the initial cost of their SUVs, the cost of the battery is excluded from the price of the vehicle. Customers will then pay a monthly subscription fee to VinFast who will be responsible for battery maintenance, repairs, and replacement for the life of the vehicle.

For those purchasing a VF8 or VF9 SUV in 2022 or 2023, the monthly subscription cost will be frozen for the entire life of their vehicle.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out in the minds of American consumers who love their subscriptions as much as they cherish car payments.
