Villeneuve Admits Stefan GP Opportunity

Jacques Villeneuve admitted that returning to Formula One with Stefan Grand Prix in 2010 would be a great opportunity for his racing career. Several lately reports have suggested that the 1997 Formula One champion has already agreed terms with the Serbian team, and will likely partner Kazuki Nakajima in the team's 2010 lineup, on the condition it gets the entry to the 2010 season from the FIA.

It is really difficult to keep track of what is happening. Do they (Stefan) already have an official starting place?” asked Villeneuve when being himself asked about the latest rumors linking him to a race seat with Stefan GP by Germany's Auto Motor und Sport.

If they get a place in Formula One, that would be a great opportunity. As they are apparently supported by Bernie Ecclestone, you must assume that they will make it and take them seriously. With the equipment from Toyota, they could be the best new team,” added the Canadian driver.

Villeneuve has previously been in the rumor mill regarding the securing of an F1 deal in recent months, having had some contacts with either US F1 – he actually admitted those talks – or Lotus F1 Team, whose headquarters he visited last November.

Additionally, it has emerged that his seat with Stefan Grand Prix would not depend on sponsorship issues, as it was the case with US F1. And that's because Zoran Stefanovic's team – supported, among others, by the Serbian government – needs an experienced driver to keep developing the car that they've purchased from Toyota (the TF110).

Earlier this week, Stefanovic confirmed that he will issue a statement soon enough regarding his team's future lineup for the 2010 season. Ralf Schumacher is also in contention for that second seat, while Nakajima currently seems the only certainty for the Cologne-based outfit.
