Vijay Mallya Lobbies for New Point System

Force India's Vijay Mallya has obviously not paid a whole lot of attention to the drivers' arguments concerning the new medal system, as he revealed he is very much in favor of then new “winner takes all” approach, ratified by the FIA. However, he did mention such a change should have been discussed earlier this winter in order for it to be implemented from as early as this season.

“The move to give the championship to the driver who wins the most races is great, as it will motivate the drivers to win more, but there has to be a procedure to make a rule. I agree that the FIA is trying to make it (more) exciting but the timing of the rule change hampers the preparation for the season,” said Mallya in an interview for Asian Age newspaper, as reported by GMM news agency.

According to the new system, the driver winning the most races throughout the season would become world champion, regardless of the points scored. Only if two or more drivers will end the season with the same number of wins, the points would be taken into consideration. The FIA decided upon that system last week, but they are likely to postpone it until 2010 due to its late announcement.

Shortly after the announcement of the new rules by the FIA, most F1 drivers have complained that the medal-based system can only damage the sport rather than improve its popularity. Fernando Alonso, Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher – only to name current and former F1 champions – have all insisted the new system will be confusing for the fans and unjust for the drivers.

Under the medal system, one could find himself in the position of winning the title races before the actual end of the season. Also, consistent drivers would find themselves in the situation of not even making the overall podium as opposed to drivers making plenty of mistakes during a season but taking one lucky win.

It is expected for the FIA to implement the medal system into the F1 rule book in 2010, either under its current format or slightly changed.
