Veyron, Watch Out!

As the current production car land speed record is set by the Bugatti Veyron at 407 km/h (253 mph), some car manufacturers believe they can break it. This is also the case of SSC, an American manufacturer of exclusive super cars, as they have just announced that they are getting ready for an attempt to set a new speed record.

Testing will begin on March 21st, and in order to do so, SSC has teamed up with MKM Racing and closed down a 19 km (12 miles) portion of Highway 93 in Elko County, Nevada. MKM racing is there to provide logistical support, in the form of laser traps for verifying speeds to an accuracy of .01 km, and to oversee safety measures.

What exactly does the Ultimate Aero TT has under the hood, being so cocky to think that they can beat the Veyron, some might ask? Well, taking into consideration the fact that the SSC team has spent almost seven years developing this machine, with 1185 horsepower and 1483 Nm of torque, we could say that the Ultimate Aero TT has a good chance of beating the Veyron. All this power comes from a twin-turbo V8 engine, and some tests have already been conducted in NASA's wind tunnel over at Langley where the car showed a drag coefficient of .357 and and a maximum speed of 439 km/h (273 mph).

Even though SSC does not keep a secret out of wanting to beat the Veyron and become the fastest production car ever, this sounds like nothing more than a publicity stunt. Would we be talking about the Aero TT right now, if they hadn't announced their attempt of breaking the Veyron speed record? Not really! Anyway, SSC also wants to make the Aero a car for the road, equipping it with leather/suede interior, custom Recaro seats, 10 speaker audio system, DVD, navigation and backing-up camera.
