Vettel Tops Sunday's Testing at Jerez

Red Bull Racing have sure got themselves a competitive car to tackle the upcoming F1 season, as the latest results in testing show a dominant RB5 ahead of its competition. Or maybe it's because of the driver. Either way, Sebastian Vettel mastered yesterday's testing session at Jerez, finishing ahead of 2nd placed Felipe Massa by more than one second.

Vettel's RB5 recorded the best time of 1:19.055 after benefiting from the second best mileage of the teams present at the Jerez group meeting (McLaren's Pedro de la Rosa ran the MP4-24 for 94 laps, as compared to Vettel's 87).

The Sunday session was short-cut by a midday rain, which caused all teams to interrupt their testing programmes. After the resuming of the testing, Felipe Massa had a short visit off-track, which cut his overall mileage to only 63 laps. However, the Brazilian managed to post the second best time of the day (1:20.330) ahead of 3rd placed Kamui Kobayashi, driving the Toyota TF109 (1:20.699).

Williams' FW31 had a decent day on Sunday, as Nico Rosberg posted the 4th best time of the testing sheets, ahead of BMW's Robert Kubica. However, the Pole used most of yesterday's testing on getting the grips on the 2010-spec Bridgestone tires, while also focusing on race starts in the second part of the session. The BMW Sauber F1.09 also had an engine change in the morning that compromised his entire morning session.

Sixth overall was Force India's Giancarlo Fisichella, who tested the VJM02 for the first time since its official launch on Saturday. He was followed by McLaren's Pedro de la Rosa, who, like Kubica, focused on evaluating the 2010-spec Bridgestone tires – different from the 2009 compounds because of the tire warmers & refuelling ban.

Finally, Renault was again on the bottom of the timing sheet, as Brazilian Nelsinho Piquet ended the day with the best time of 1:22.011 – with the R29 suffering from a few reliability problems.
