Vettel Takes Pole Position in Abu Dhabi

Sebastian Vettel clinched his first pole position in Abu Dhabi this Saturday, and will start the season finale ahead of McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton. Indeed, the qualifying action today wasn’t the Red Bull1-2 everyone was expecting it to be, as both McLarens – Hamilton and Jenson Button – interfered quite often with the best times set by the Red Bulls and Fernando Alonso.

After Alonso was clocked with the best lap time of Q1, Sebastian Vettel stepped in and secured 1st place at the end of both Q2 and Q3. The German was the first to stop the clock under one minute and 40 seconds and eventually scored his 15th pole position of career by improving his best time to 1:39.394.

Behind Hamilton, Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso will start from 3rd place, his late effort in Q3 bringing a smile on Luca di Montezemolo’s face. Completing the second row will be Jenson Button, while the second Red Bull racer and main rival for Alonso in the title fight Mark Webber only managed to score the 5th best time of the day.

Sixth and seventh went to Brazilian duo Felipe Massa and Rubens Barrichello, while Mercedes GP are set to finish the season on a high note with Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg in 8th and 9th place respectively. Finally, the Top 10 was completed by Renault’s Vitaly Petrov.

Failing to make the Top 10 at the end of Q2 were Robert Kubica, Kamui Kobayashi, Adrian Sutil, Nick Heidfeld, Nico Hulkenberg, Vitantonio Liuzzi and Jaime Alguersuari. Finally, the grid will look in its rear part with Sebastien Buemi in 18th place, followed by Lotus duo Jarno Trulli and Heikki Kovalainen, Virgin pair Timo Glock and Lucas di Grassi and HRT F1’s Bruno Senna and Christian Klien.
