Vettel Sets Winning Targets in 2009

Red Bull Racing's newcomer Sebastien Vettel knows exactly what he wants from the new season. After becoming a Formula 1 race winner last year, thanks to his impressive performance at Monza, the German tipped to become the new Michael Schumacher by F1 supreme Bernie Ecclestone has only one thing in mind: topping the F1 field race after race.

Vettel switched from Toro Rosso to Red Bull Racing following David Coulthard's departure from the sport at the end of 2008 and is expected to take his new team higher in the standings. As he admitted the new changes implemented in Formula 1 can only closed the gap between smaller teams and F1's “big guns”, the German driver prefers to keep his feet on the ground and challenge for points consistently in 2009.

“The target is to win. Obviously it's not correct sitting here and say I am going to win the world championship. I want to, but we need to see. We need to see how we are going, where we are in comparison to the others. I believe that the new rules could give a chance to teams like us to close the gap to the front but the favourites are Ferrari and McLaren, no doubt,” said Vettel at the unveiling of the new Red Bull RB5 today.

“If we are doing extremely well then we will be in a position to score points regularly and maybe fight for a little bit more. I am not the kind of guy to tell you we are going to be here. I prefer to stay on the floor and work hard. If we are getting a surprise then it's much better!” added Vettel.

Although he is barely getting to know his team ahead of the 2009 season, Vettel admitted he expects to beat Mark Webber on track every time he gets. Starting with the Australian Grand Prix. However, he insisted his teammate will not enter the cockpit unless he will 100% fit to race.

“If Mark is in the car he will be fit, if he is not fit he will not be in the car. So far, as I have spoken with him the recovery is going on well. It's not an easy thing to handle for him but I believe he is experienced and wise enough to know if it is good for him to race,” added Vettel.
