Verizon to Buy CNG Capable Ford E-250 Vans

The push to make fleets more eco-friendly (or cost effective, depending how one sees the matter) leads to more and more fleet operators in the US turn to alternative fuel-powered vehicles for their daily use.

Communications giant Verizon is one of the most active companies when it comes to turning their fleet green. After earlier this month Verizon placed an order for 76 Chevrolet Silverado Two-Mode hybrid vehicles, the company now turned to GM's rival Ford, from which it will purchase 501 Ford E-250 cargo vans, capable of operating on compressed natural gas (CNG).

"Verizon's fleet team is constantly on the watch for new, lower-carbon technology," Ken McKenney, Verizon Sustainable Fleet-Technical Engineering chief said in a statement.

"CNG is a leading alternative fuel choice right now, so converting these cargo vans to run on the cleaner-burning fuel helps us cut CO2 emissions and fuel consumption. We will continue to find ways to increase the efficiency of our fleet."

The vehicles will be purchased from Ford and converted to run on CNG by BAF. The order is part of the program launched by Verizon to replace 1,100 traditional fuel vehicles with cleaner ones. With the 501 Ford E-250 cargo vans, the communications company aims to reduce its CO2 footprint by 1.62 metric tons each year.

"Verizon's deployment of natural gas-fueled vehicles sets a powerful example for fleet operators across America to emulate," said John Bacon, BAF president. "Use of natural gas for fleets is a trend that is rapidly gaining momentum in many U.S. industry sectors. Because it is abundant and renewable, and cleaner and cheaper than gasoline or diesel fuel, natural gas can carry us forward to a sustainable future."
