Verizon Buys 576 Chevrolet Silverado Two-Mode Hybrids

The efforts made by big US fleet operators to make their car fleet more efficient in terms of fuel consumption and more eco-friendly when it comes to emission levels got a boost this weekend, after American broadband and telecommunications company announced an order for 576 Chevrolet Silverado Two-Mode hybrid vehicles.

When Verizon first approached us about environmentally friendly and fuel-efficient vehicles for their urban drivers, we knew the Silverado Hybrid was the perfect fit because of its outstanding city and highway MPG ratings,” said Brian Small, GM Fleet and Commercial Operation general manager. “Immediately the team went to work to meet Verizon’s ambitious July delivery deadline.

The hybrid system used in the Silverado is made up of an internal combustion engine and battery-powered electric motors. With the capability of reaching an EPA estimated 21 mpg city and 22 mpg highway, the Silverado is able to travel with speeds of up to 30 mph on electricity.

The other hybrid mode used in the Silverado enables the 332 horsepower and 367 lb.-ft of torque Vortec 6.0L V8 engine to work in a V4 mode, giving the Silverado a fuel consumption figure which is some 40 percent lower than in conventional full-size pickups.

A major part of our sustainability strategy is to make smart use of lower-carbon alternatives to power our fleet and the operation of our high-IQ broadband networks,” said James Gowen, Chief Sustainability Officer for Verizon. “By adding 1,600 alternative energy vehicles to our fleet this year we’re conserving fuel, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving air quality in communities across the country.

The pickups will be deployed by Verizon in urban areas from various markets. The trucks will be modified by BrandFX Body Company and GM, a light-weight fiberglass insert which will house Verizon’s service equipment.
