Venturi EV to Break 700 Km/h on The Salt Flats in 2014

When you think about the Salt Flats in Utah, you picture a lot of petrol heads pushing their gas-guzzlers on the limit, trying to break speed records on the immense dried lake since 1914.

But growling multiple cylinder cars and sleek jet engined vehicles are not the only contenders on the arid plains, as electric powered cars are making their way in land speed record setting too.

For example, the Venturi VBB-3 is a record-breaking all electric vehicle with a long tradition, paying homage to Camille Jenatazy’s electric car that first broken the legendary 100 km/h (62 mph) barrier back in 1899.

Since 2009, the Venturi/Buckeye Bullet Team holds the world speed record for an electric vehicle, reaching 487 km/h (302.6 mph) in 2009 and 495 km/h (307.6 mph) in 2010. Now they are working on to upgrade its motor to 3000 hp, to break the 700 km/h (435 mph) barrier in August 2014.

Driving the long and sleek beast, will be the official Transportation Research Center driver Roger Schroer, who is also a member of the very elite 300 mph Club, composed by 60 pilots that have crossed the 300 mph (482.8 km/h) limit.
