Apparently, the German police doesn't like you driving around in a gold-wrapped car. It's too dazzling for other drivers. Fortunately, the chrome wrapping trend has died down, even in over-the-top places like London, Monaco or Dubai.
So when we saw a golden BMW M850i in our Instagram feed, it immediately grabbed our attention. Unfortunately, one click later, we realized that the photo we were looking at wasn't even a photo, but a digital rendering based on the 3D model of the car.
Unfortunately, we don't know a lot about the process of taking a car model and making it golden and realistic. But there are a few obvious challenges, the main one being that the surface of the car needs to reflect everything around it in a realistic way, and you probably need a lot of computing power to render that.
That part of the rendering is very good, but the ambient occlusion gives it away. By that, we mean that a real car would project a different kind of shadow onto the ground. But besides the gold Bimmer, rendering specialist Plastiliner also created velvet-covered versions of the M850i as well as an indirect rival, the AMG GT 63 S. Together, they form the ideal M+AMG garage for 2019, minus the velvet, of course.
Yesterday, we talked about how the AMG GT 63 4-door differs from the GT R two-door, so today, we'll focus on what the two German rivals have in common. Both use front-mounted twin-turbo V8 engines. The one in the BMW is a little bigger but is down on power until the arrival of the M8.
Also, the two coupes have AWD and launch control, plus BMW is working on a 4-door version of the 8 Series which will compete directly with the GT 63S. And just look at those grille designs, which have such a similar exterior outline. Maybe this is the way a sports car is supposed to look now.
