Vauxhall Start/Stop EcoFLEX Model to Be Displayed in Geneva

The upcoming Geneva Auto Show will be invaded by eco developments, with one of the carmakers to follow the green pathway being Vauxhall, which will display its latest Start/Stop-featuring models at the event.

The new developments include the new Astra ecoFLEX, which emits 104 grams of CO2 per km, and the company’s most economical production vehicle, the Corsa 1.3 CDTi (95 hp), which only emits 94 grams of CO2 per km (three-door model).

The vehicles also offer a high fuel efficiency, with the 95 hp 1.3 CDTI ecoFLEX Astra with Start/Stop returning 72.4 UK mpg and the Corsa (with the same engine & Start/Stop system) returning 80.7 mpg (the five door model returns 78.5 mpg and emits 95 grams of CO2 per km).

The principle of Start/Stop technology is simple: instead of the engine idling at traffic lights or at a level crossing, the engine automatically stops when the driver engages neutral and releases the clutch. When the traffic lights turn green, the driver simply presses the clutch pedal to re-start the engine, engages first and moves away. Naturally, the car’s ventilation, power steering and braking system performance are maintained while the engine is temporarily off,” explains the press release.

Vauxhall will roll out more ecoFLEX models using Start/Stop technology before the end of 2011, including even lower CO2-emitting versions of the Insignia and Meriva. This forms part of a long-term strategy to introduce Start/Stop across all car lines before the end of 2012, significantly reducing emissions without impacting on a car’s performance.

autoevolution will be attending the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, so stay tuned for some real up close and personal shots of the vehicles, as well as for first-hand details of the motorized contraptions presented at the event.
