Vauxhall Refuses to Sell Chinese MG Cars in the UK

After GM's admitted earlier this week that it talks with SAIC over certain plans the Chinese have for the British market, Vauxhall was believed to turn into a distribution hub for the MG-branded models aimed for the United Kingdom. In fact, General Motors said in a statement that it indeed negotiates with SAIC on a number of topics, leaving room for interpretation and making everyone believe that Vauxhall could be in charge of MG models delivery.

"We have agreed in an MOU that we would discuss the potential for MG to be distributed in the UK," said Kevin Wale, president and managing director for GM's China operations. "And that's what we are doing at the moment."

That's not the case however, as Vauxhall won't grant access to its UK sales network, so no MG models are going to be found in showrooms belonging to the British brand.

''Opportunities being discussed do not include selling MG Motor products alongside Vauxhall in the same showroom," General Motors said in a statement according to UK dealer magazine AM.

There are still a number of things to be clarified, as SAIC is still looking into ways to start European sales and, because it owns the Longbridge plant in Birmingham, Vauxhall looked like the best solution for the Chinese company. SAIC, who wants to sell the model in several European markets, intends to start production of the MG6 hatchback in the United Kingdom by the end of the year, so more details are very likely to emerge in the upcoming weeks.
