Vauxhall Crossland X Ultimate Launched, Is Ready for VW T-Cross

Volkswagen is always late for every segment but makes an impact when it finally arrives. So Vauxhall strengthened its little Crossland X with an upmarket trim level called Ultimate just ahead of the VW T-Cross launch.

This model has every button, every feature and piece of trim the automaker offers, plus a fresh color. The only problem is that it costs an eye-watering £22,480, while a normal Crossland X starts from £17,110.

Three powertrains will be available. The base unit is a 1.2 Ecotec with 110 PS (108bhp) and 205 Nm, which can get to 62 mph ( 100 km/h) in 10.6 seconds. There's an automatic gearbox option for it, though the more powerful 1.2 Turbo with 130 PS (128 bhp) is restricted to a six-speed manual. There are no 4WD versions at all.

The Crossland X is dorky, to say the least, a small MPV trying to look rugged. However, its proportions are no stranger than those of the VW T-Cross. What's more, in full spec with LED headlights and this metallic brown paint, the Vauxhall looks a little posh. You've got 17-inch diamond-cut alloys, metallic skid plates, and roof rails plus a contrasting roof color. Black works fine.

Inside, the Crossland is kitted out with leather on the wheel, shifter and seats. Strangely, the color of the stitching doesn't match, but we'll let that slide.

As standard, this high-spec trim level gets the 8-inch infotainment with Apple and Android, forward collision alert and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection. Pay extra a little more, and they will install LED headlights which adapt according to your steering and speed. The Go Park Plus isn't that expensive either, bundling things like a reversing camera, blind spot detection, and park assist.

The Crossland X is a replacement for the old Meriva and has a massive trunk for this size of crossover because the rear seats can slide around. It sits on the Peugeot car platform and uses French engines as well.
