As The Rolling Stones will have you know, “you can’t always get what you want.” However, if you’ve been dreaming of a high-performance bike at the price of a medium-range one, VanMoof is here to challenge the status quo.
VanMoof was launched in 2009 as an e-bike boutique in the Netherlands but today, 120,000 riders later, it counts with stores throughout Europe and in the U.S. The current international health crisis might seem like a strange moment to launch a new product, let alone two of them, but e-bike orders have seen an unexpected surge. VanMoof is reporting such an overwhelming demand in interest, hence the introduction of the next-generation models S3 and X3.

The S3 and X3 build on the previous generation of e-bikes, but are smarter, better and, apparently paradoxically, cheaper. VanMoof explains that the drop in price is due to improvements in the supply chain and building a proprietary manufacturing and distribution system. This way, e-bike riders will be able to get the new, upgraded models at 40% off the price of the predecessors: $1,998 (€1,998 / £1,798), as compared to $3,398.

S3 and X3 deliver “high tech [at a] low price,” VanMoof says. They differ in size, with the S3 being designed for larger riders, while the X3 is for shorter riders. They pack plenty of power, since the motor has been upgraded to be more powerful and more silent, being able to reach top speeds of 32 kph (20 mph). The European versions are electronically limited to be slower, due to EU regulations.

Both models come with 4-speed automatic transmission using electronic shifting, Turbo Boost mode, integrated lighting, hydraulic braking system, and the kick lock from previous-gen models, which locks the rear wheel with a single touch of the toe and activates the on-board anti-theft tech. The bikes come with smart connectivity and riders can customize everything from shift points to bell ring on their phone, via a dedicated app. Smart connectivity also offers GPS tracking, rider recognition remote lockdown and the possibility to report the bike as stolen.

Estimated range is of 60-150 km (37-93 miles), and varies according to the level of pedal-assist, weight of the rider and other factors like weather and terrain.

VanMoof’s S3 and X3 were officially introduced on April 21, but pre-orders started long before that. Deliveries will start in May, with VanMoof offering test rides at its stores in Amsterdam, Berlin, London, San Francisco and New York. Pop-ups in Rotterdam and Utrecht will appear starting April 28. and in other territories should the current situation allow it.

“Launching a revolutionary bike that will change cycling for good, at a moment when the world needs it most. Because now more than ever it’s time for cleaner cities with healthier people,” VanMoof says of its brand new e-bikes.
