Movistar Yamaha MotoGP Team rider Valentino Rossi was involved in an enduro accident, during a training activity close to his hometown, on Thursday, August 31st. He was taken to the Ospedale Civile di Urbino for an in-depth check-up where it has been revealed he broke two major bones in his leg.
The 38-year-old Italian rider was diagnosed with displaced fractures of the tibia and fibula of his right leg. He was then transported to the Azienda Ospedaliero-Universitaria Ospedali Riuniti in Ancona.

After arriving there, Rossi went through a surgery between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. performed by Doctor Raffaele Pescarella, Director of the Orthopedics and Traumatology Division. During the surgery, the fractures were fixated using a metal pin (also known as a locked intramedullary nail), and it ended without any complications.

“The surgery went well," Rossi said. “This morning, when I woke up, I felt already good. I would like to thank the staff of the Ospedali Riuniti in Ancona, and in particular, Doctor Pascarella who operated on me. I'm very sorry for the incident. Now I want to be back on my bike as soon as possible. I will do my best to make it happen!"

With ten days remaining until the next MotoGP round at San Marino, The Doctor might have to sit this one out and possibly lose his current fourth position in the 2017 overall standings with 157 points. Team mate Maverick Vinales currently holds the third place with 170 points, just four less than Marc Marquez in second.

Repsol Honda Team Dani Pedrosa is now fifth place in the Championship scoring 148 points. The Spaniard could easily swap places with Rossi if he has to stay out on September 10th at the Gran Premio Tribul Mastercard di San Marino e della Riviera di Rimini. All Pedrosa has to do is finish the race at least in 6th place.
