Gas is cheaper than ever, and no self-respecting automaker can do without a V8-powered sports sedan... or five. Jaguar has never shied away from dumping its 5.0-liter supercharged engine into all manner of cool rides that end up on our bedroom walls, so why shouldn't the list also include a crossover?
After the highly successful launch of the F-Type SVR, Car and Driver reports that Jaguar is currently developing hot versions of the XE sedan and the F-Pace, the fist crossover in their history.

The Leaper's PR director previously stated that EVs and smaller engines are not going to be excluded from the SVR family. However, you'll be glad to know that the XE and F-Pace are poised to receive a V8, so the minimum output is around 500 hp.

Since its introduction in 2009, the AJ-V8 Gen III has had several power outputs. However, we'll be more than happy with whichever one they decide to offer. This could a unique opportunity for Jaguar to offer more power and performance than their rivals at Mercedes-AMG. We need to consider that the F-Pace's direct rival is the GLC, and it will pack a 4.0 a maximum of 510 PS. The Brits can easily offer 40 or 65 hp more.

Not so fast!

We need to take this story with an extra-large grain of salt, not because C&D is leading us on, but because Jaguar hasn't got the money to develop everything it wants. According to the report, a prototype for the XE SVR is currently under development but has yet to receive the green light for production.

What's holding them back? Just the environment image of making more performance vehicles while developing their first electric cars. Back in Europe, Jaguar is fighting a battle that's not yet happening in America: CO2 emissions. New regulations coming into effect in 2020 are forcing pretty much every European carmaker to develop plug-in hybrids and downsize.

Just like BMW's M cars, the Jaguar SVR vehicles are defined by so much more than just power and big engines. They need to have a certain feel and exhaust sound that hasn't been drilled into the 380 horsepower V6 that's currently available, powerful as it might be. We believe that sooner or later, the Brits are going to have to take the 5.0 back down in size to a 4.0-liter, which seems to be the engine size preferred by all the Germans.
