Ford used to make all kinds of cool sedans with V8 engines. Probably the last closest thing to a Mustang sedan was something called the Falcon XR8, made in Australia. But the automaker isn't really interested in sedans right now, probably not even the Mustang.
But who's to say that you can't make your own version and become an Internet hero in the process? That's what Matt Soppa did, and he didn't even start with something easy like a RWD sedan. No, his creation is based on the Fusion, a normal mid-size that rivals the Camry or Accord.
It's a model Ford intents to kill, but up until about a year ago, it sported a potent little powertrain in the form of a twin-turbo 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6, a bit like the ones you find on some ST models. It's good for 325 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque (515 Nm). While it could have been boosted to V8 levels of output, Matt wanted to hear a naturally aspirated heartbeat.
And he got one via a 2007 Mustang GT. With new headers and a remap, the owner believes it's making about 450 horsepower. Would a supercharger be too much to ask or would that blow the welds on the Fusion?
In any case, making a Fustang isn't as easy as taking out the four-cylinder trash. After dropping in the 5.0-liter, the sedan needed to be taught to "speak V8." Obviously, a whole lot of cutting and welding went on to fit a big engine longitudinally, including the space needed for the Tremec TR6060 six-speed manual from a 2007 Shelby Mustang GT sending power to the rear wheels.
While the exterior looks almost stock, the interior is fully stripped. A couple of racing buckets and a full roll cage now call this Fusion home. Watch Hoonigan's video to experience the one and only tail-happy Fusion.
