Used Fisker Karma, World's First Plug-In Luxury Car, Might Be Worth Spending Your Money

The Fisker Karma is a luxury sports sedan from the romantic era of electrified cars. It was one of the world's first luxury cars that could be charged at the plug socket. It debuted in 2008 at the North American International Auto Show, but the model didn't hit the mass market until 3 years later, in 2011.

Prices in the U.S. started at $102,000 for the base model (EcoStandard), $110,000 for the mid-size EcoSport and $116,000 for the top model (EcoChic). Approximately 1,800 units were delivered in North America and Europe by December 2012.

Currently, one of the least expensive Fisker Karma cars can be bought on the used car market for 33,000 euros (about $34,700), the sale ad appearing on Mobile.de. The car has a mileage of 44,500 km (27,700 miles).

The hybrid powertrain includes a 2.0-liter gasoline engine used as a range extender and two electric motors that offer a combined output of 408 hp (413 PS) and 959 lb-ft (1,300 Nm) of torque. As a range extended electric vehicle, the Fisker Karma includes two driving modes. One mode uses the combustion engine to charge the 20,1 kWh lithium-ion battery, while the other uses the two electric motors until they deplete the battery.

When the electric motors are running alone, it can deliver just 32 miles (50 km) of range. At the time, that was an impressive range, but not enough to rely on or be considered cost-effective in today's market.

However, in our opinion, the Fisker Karma was a pretty cool and classic car and maybe it might be worth spending your money.

Returning to the story of the Fisker Karma, its lifespan was quite short. Production was suspended in November 2012 when the sole battery supplier to Fisker Automotive, A123 Systems, filed for bankruptcy following two battery recalls.

Even if the production did not last for many years, the car managed to win enough fans, especially among celebrities. For those unfamiliar with the brand, suffice it to say that examples of this model are, or have been, in the garages of celebrities such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, and Justin Bieber.
