Used Car Dealers From NY Targeted for Selling Unfixed Recalled Vehicles

Whoa! What's the matter with the auto industry these days? On one hand there's General Motors and its almost 30 million population of recalled vehicles and now we found out that NYC municipality is cooking up something for used car dealers that sold recalled cars without fixing them first.

New York City's Department of Consumer Affairs is currently investigating approximately 200 used car dealerships for hard evidence that incriminates dealers for selling unsafe vehicles and failing to inform buyers that those cars are involved in recalls.

Although only new car dealerships are prohibited by federal law to sell new vehicles subjected to a safety campaign, the Big Apple has much tighter regulations in this case.

The Department of Consumer Affairs told in a recent statement that "under City Law, a car with recalled parts that are unrepaired is not deemed to be roadworthy. New York City is in a unique position to investigate these businesses because of the City's licensing and consumer protection laws, the presence of a strong DCA and the fact that it is illegal to sell cars 'as is' under state and City law."

Speaking about this particular investigation, DCA commissioner Julie Menin declared that "We're not going to wait for tragic statistics to demand that dealers repair these ticking time bombs. Dealerships who have sold unrepaired recalled cars must take responsibility and notify their consumers immediately to repair the vehicles… consumers shouldn't have to wait for new legislation, a court battle, or a tragedy, to know the car they bought is safe as required by law."

Even though researchers from iSeeCars found out that recalled General Motors vehicles have dropped in price dramatically, a cheap and cheerful motor isn't worth risking your life for. Last but not least, if New York City's DCA can do it and stop second-hand dealers from selling these death traps on wheels, then the rest of the United States should take example.
