US Toledo Factory Almost Ready for Alfa Romeo SUV Production

Chrysler will be termination production of the Jeep Liberty, at their Toledo North, Ohio factory. The exact date is August 16th, a date which will be followed by a period in which the factory will stay idle, while awaiting the necessary preparations for the production of the Alfa Romeo SUV (and its Jeep derivative).

The two SUVs will share both their platform, engines, and running gear, but will probably be drastically different in terms of styling (we hope that is not just wishful thinking). Furthermore, in order to increase the plant’s capacity when it does come back online again, Chrysler will be investing no less than $1.7- (€1.38-) billion (the addition of a 25,000 suqare meter wing to the original facility), while also hiring an additional 1,100 workers and adding a second shift - the factory has been working on a single shift for three years, now.

Also, according to autoedizione.com, the new SUV, which will be underpinned by a variation of the group’s Compact US Wide platform (also used for the Alfa Romeo Giulietta and Dodge Dart), may start rolling off the production line as early as, well, early 2013. We must admit to eagerly anticipating this one!
