US Riders Rejoice: Yamaha FZ-07 Goes Stateside

Great news from Yamaha for the North American riders: the new killer naked twin MT-07 bike (by its European name) will cross the pond and be soon available in the US, as the FZ-07. Even though Yamaha has been quite secretive as to the availability of the new 689cc twin in the US, it’s fairly easy to understand that they were not going to miss this market.

One of Yamaha’s new-generation of bikes equipped with the Crossplane engine, the FZ-07 bridges the gap between the half-liter machines and the liter-class ones, introducing a very convenient naked middleweight class for the intermediate rider and even more.

The FZ-07 shares the same DNA with the FZ-09, centered on a compact design which provides very good day-long comfort for both casual rides and longer hauls, while offering good mileage and plenty of nerve to be thrilling. The new parallel twin packs 75 hp at 9,000 rpm and 68 Nm (50 lb-ft) of torque at a very usable 6,500 rpm. With a wet weight of 179 kg, the FZ-09 is not exactly the lightest naked machine, but neither is it a fat, heavy cow.

With a 3.7 US gallon (14 liters) tank and a claimed economy of 58 mpg (4 l/100 km), the 2014 FZ-07 should be indeed a great choice for more than riders looking for their first machine. ABS will most likely be optional like it is in Europe, for a still unknown reason. A new bike should offer ABS as standard equipment, even though it would slot a bit higher in the price list…

The competition will be tight in this segment, as the Yamaha FZ-07 will have to do battle with the likes of smallest Ducati Monster, Kawasaki ER-6n or Ninja 650, Aprilia Shiver and the very fun-to-ride KTM 690 Duke. The price is expected to be around the $6,990 (€5,150) mark which is only a grand under the price tag of the FZ-09, and we can presume this will be an interesting choice to make for some customers. The 2014 Yamaha FZ-07 is expected in dealerships in July.
