U.S. Production Not a Priority for Audi

Audi has denied speculation that it intends to produce and sell a new model in the US following the increasing sales registered in the last quarter. There had been rumors the German automaker could develop a car build in the U.S. but an Audi spokesman denied the possibility, at least for the moment.

"There are neither concrete plans nor decisions concerning an Audi model developed for the US, or for the production of Audi vehicles in the US," an unnamed spokesman told just-auto.com website. "There is also no urgent requirement for production at the moment in the US," he added.

Audi’s greatest rivals, BMW and Mercedes-Benz, already have production facilities in the US. BMW owns South Carolina’s Spartanburg plant, where X5, X6 and Z4 models are produced, while Mercedes-Benz operates Alabama’s Tuscaloosa factory, where the M-Class, GL-Class and R-Class models are assembled.

Audi's US sales rose 35% so far this year, the largest progress among luxury brands. The company's American division posted the best first-quarter sales in its history and the company expects to sell 90,000 vehicles this year.

Worldwide sales were also on the up, 264,100 cars being sold in the first quarter of 2010. It is the best result for the period, with the March sales of 110,400 being its highest ever monthly total. In China, the market with the highest growth, the brand from Ingolstadt delivered 51,400 units, up 77.3 percent as compared to Q1 last year.  New A5 Sportback and A5 Cabriolet models helped the company achieve these records while there were also strong sales of the Q5 and of the A4 and A6 models.
