The Smokey and the Bandit flick of 1977 is by far the greatest commercial ever made for the Pontiac Trans Am. The car, a special version of the Firebird, was driven in the movie by Burt Reynolds to both epic scenes and car stardom.
Ever since the actor’s death in September 2018, most of the cars he owned were sold at various auctions. Some of them ended up in not so good hands.

On October 15, the U.S. Marshals announced the seizure of 149 classic, luxury and performance vehicles. They were taken away from the DC Solar company in the Eastern District of California as part of a federal civil case involving the company’s owners.

Among these cars, which include big names of auto history like 1960s Ford Mustangs and 1990s Humvees, there’s a very special 1978 Pontiac Trans Am formerly owned by Burt Reynolds. The car did not star in the movie itself, but was gifted to the actor as the memento of the one used on the set.

“It is rare for the U.S. Marshals to hold an auction of such a stunning collection of vehicles,” said in a statement Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal Lasha Boyden with the Sacramento office of the U.S. Marshals.

“We’ve got classic 1960s Ford Mustangs, 1990s Humvees, a 1960 Austin-Healey, and even a 1978 Pontiac Trans Am that was owned by Burt Reynolds as a memento of the car he drove in the movie ‘Smokey and the Bandit.’”

The auction of all the cars on the lot is handled by Apple Auctioneering and a preview of it will be held in Woodland, California. It will start at 8 a.m. on Thursday, October 24, and will run into Friday, October 25. A physical presence at the site is not required, as the auction will be available on the web as well.
