US: BMW Motorrad Recalls Over 15,000 Motorcycles

Approximately a week ago, more or less, we were reporting that the motorcycle arm of German manufacturer BMW – namely BMW Motorrad – announced the recall of R-Series boxer-twin and K 1200 GT motorcycles due to an issue involving the front brake line.

At the time, it was discovered that vibrations of the faulty brake pipe “could cause the front brake pipe to leak and, over an extended period of time, brake fluid to escape.” Today, BMW of North America confirmed that the bikes affected were the ones produced between August 2006 and May 2009 as follows: 2007-2008 K 1200GT; 2007-2009 R 1200 GS, R 1200 GS Adventure, R 1200 R, R 1200 RT and finally 2007 R 1200 ST.

Additionally, it seems that the German manufacturer is now faced with further recalls, this time related to a potential breaking of a roll gear pin's mounting attachment for the 2007 and 2008 G 650 models (X Country, X Moto and X Challenge). This could lead to the rear wheel of these motorcycle locking up and potentially leading to a crash.

This second recall is for units produced and delivered by BMW of North America between November 29, 2006 and May 19, 2008.

Finally, the third and last recall announced by the North American arm of BMW Motorrad is focused on potential drive chain failure for the 2008 and 2009 F 650 GS and F 800 GS models. Like in the case of the G models, this problem may result in the lock up of the rear wheel (with the broken chain being potentially trapped in between the rear wheel and the frame of the bike), which may lead to potential crashes.

The report made public by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) did not issue any figures regarding the number of G and F models to be recalled.
