US Army Vehicles to Get VIS-X System

Being a driver, or a passenger for that matter, in a military vehicle is not quite the same as being one in your every day commuter vehicle. Whereas the civilians' need for clear, intelligible communication within a vehicle can be satisfied by say, rolling up the window, not the same can be said about soldiers.

To that end, the US Army has selected Northrop Grumman Cobham Intercoms to be the provider for the VIS-X (Vehicular Intercommunication System Expanded) system for its Communications and Electronics Command (CECOM).

Northrop will provide 500 VIS-X systems per month during the first year. The VIS-X is intended to provide vehicle crew members with increased command and control of the on-board and external communication assets, connection to future Internet Protocol (IP)-based digital communications networks, VoIP services, and an increased number of user interfaces for use by crew and next generation IP radios.

"VIS-X will allow soldiers and other vehicle mounted troops to communicate faster, safer and more securely with greater understanding of the operational situation during the most demanding missions," Steve Collier, Cobham Defense vice president said in a release.

Deliveries of the VIS-X will be increased over the following years to 2,000 units per month. In the end, some 85,000 military vehicles will be fitted with the system, in a financial effort which will amount to $2.4 billion. But it will be worth it, Northrop says.

"Providing enhanced situational awareness and IP-based digital communication networks will better protect our troops and allow them to fight smarter," Jeff Palombo, Northrop Grumman's Land Forces Division vice president stated.
