Army General Dennis L. Via and Chief Engineer Dr. Grace Bochenek give Jay Leno a tour of the US Army’s latest all-terrain armored troop transporter.
As the US Army wants to decrease it’s fleet fuel consumption by 30 percent, they came up with the new FED (Fuel Efficient Demonstrator), that is a modern and somehow ecological reinterpretation of the Humvee.

The vehicle got rid of unnecessary weight, by replacing some underside mechanical parts with aluminum ones and even making the hood out of carbon-fiber. Don’t worry though, as the cabin is still protected by thick steel and bulletproof glass, as well as the bottom of the vehicle, which features a thick V-shaped aluminum sheet to dissipate the force of a mine.

The FED is powered by a Cummins turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that develops 200 hp and 770 Nm (568 lb-ft) of torque. Zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) time is not important in this case, as this monster is designed to go 120 km/h (75 mph) on almost any type of terrain, and even climb 60 degree slopes.

At the interior you find 4 seats with 5-point seatbelts, a few knobs and switches, a touchscreen LCD for additional information and sufficient stowage for army equipment. It even has an auxiliary power source for the electronics, as the sloped tailgate encases a solar panel.

With all the light parts, this all-terrain vehicle weighs about 6,800 kg (15,000 lb), unlike a traditional full armored army transporter that weighs up to 11,340 kg (25,000 lb).
