US 2010 VW Golf TDI - 29 MPG, Priced at $21,990

As you probably know, the US division of Volkswagen is getting back to the Golf nameplate, dropping the Rabbit badge used for only a few years in this particular side of the market. But what's more important is that, along with the new nameplate, the German brand will begin offering an upgraded range of vehicles, particularly optimized for reduced fuel consumption.

And to get straight to the point, the guys over at autoblog.com discovered that Volkswagen's US website points to a 29 mpg (8.1 l/100km) rating in city and 40 mpg (5.8 mpg) on the highway for the TDI, while the EPA estimates reveal even higher figures: 30 mpg (7.8 l/100km) in city conditions and 42 (5.6 l/100km) highway.

As for pricing, the 2010 Golf TDI will be priced at $21,990 for the 2-door configuration and $22,590 for the 4-door version featuring a 6-speed manual transmission. The GTI version is a bit more expensive as it is offered with a price tag of $23,290. The stock 2-door version powered by a 2.5-liter gasoline engine is priced at $17,490 while the 4-door configuration is sold for $19,190.

“The Golf is an iconic nameplate for the Volkswagen Brand and it is known throughout the world,” said Mark Barnes, COO, Volkswagen of America, when announcing the change of name for the US bound Golf. “The Golf is Volkswagen’s best selling global nameplate with more than 26 million units sold in over 120 countries. Making the change back to Golf is an important step in realigning with our global heritage."
