Urus SUV Might Become the First Lamborghini Hybrid Car

The upcoming Lamborghini Urus is the best candidate for the company’s plug-in hybrid drivetrain.

Although the new drivetrain hasn’t received the green light from the company’s board yet, some Lamborghini officials have revealed that the Urus is the best match for such technology.

In an interview with the Brits at Autocar, Lamborghini’s Research and Development boss has stated that a plug-in hybrid drivetrain would “destroy” the DNA of a car like the Aventador or the Huracan. An SUV, however, would be fit for the 200 kg plug-in hybrid system. Several reasons would make the SUV a prime choice for a plug-in hybrid drivetrain like the one shown on the Asterion Concept.

First of all, the Urus will have a big luggage compartment, unlike most Lamborghini models. This means that the engineers will have room to place the batteries of the hybrid system without leaving the car trunk-less. Like in most hybrid cars, the batteries could be placed in a way that reduces the trunk space and possibly some rear-passenger leg room.

Furthermore, the second reason the first hybrid car from Lamborghini is a good option for such a drivetrain is the way people expect these cars to handle. No customer would expect of the Urus to drive like a Huracan or Avendator, so the extra weight might not be criticized like it normally would if it were a sports car.

However, just because the Urus is an SUV, Lamborghini can’t just add weight to it and expect nobody to care. The Italian performance car builder wants to even out the weight of the plug-in hybrid system. The weight-saving process will imply using expensive materials such as titanium, magnesium and carbon fiber for almost every part of the car.

This weight-saving solution will definitely raise the price of the Urus plug-in hybrid, but Lamborghini doesn’t want to lay the cost completely on the customer’s hands. The issue is that these expenses cannot be spread over a couple of years because Lamborghini expects the luxury performance hybrid SUV market to be “dead after a couple of years,” so the company’s decision-makers have a tough call in front of them.
