About a year ahead of the end of its life, the Octavia III has received what is probably its last engine. We are talking about the 1.5 TGI, which will be added for the 2019 model year.
Several European countries enjoy a relationship with a fuel called CNG or compressed natural gas. It's cheap and relatively economical, so manufacturers also offer in-house developed engines that can run on both it and conventional gasoline.
Unless we're mistaken, the Octavia already had a TGI engine since about 2014. What's changed is an increase in displacement from 1.4 to 1.5 liters, which brings about a power boost: 110 HP for the older model vs. 130 HP right now.
The 1.5 TGI is an adaptation of the 1.5 TSI. It keeps the turbocharged setup but adopts new internals that can cope with the high-friction demands of this fuel. Of course, the reason why this engine came out this month is that every new car that goes on sale starting in September needs to comply with the EU6d-TEMP emissions standard.
Like all G-Tec/TGI models before it, the Octavia has more than one fuel tank. There's one position in front of the rear axle and two more under the trunk compartment, which is said to be made from a revolutionary new material that's strong and light.
In Europe, the 1.5 TGI will be available on the Active, Ambition and Style. Because this is a slightly more expensive setup than a regular TSI, Skoda chose to pair the engine exclusively with a seven-speed DSG gearbox.
So what about the economy numbers? Well, Skoda says that when the engine is running on CNG, its CO2 emissions are down 25%, so that's great. The tanks offer a combined volume of 17.7 kilograms or 39 lbs, which is enough for the G-Tec to run for 480 km (298 miles). In addition, there's also 11.8 liters of gasoline for when you need it. Unless we're mistaken, the combined range is less than the previous model because it had a larger capacity for regular fuel.
