Updated 2013 Subaru WRX Proves Impressive Before Nurburgring

The 2013 Subaru WRX STI Nurburgring 24-hour race car was put to test at the Fuji Speedway in Japan, and produced some impressive results ahead of its most important challenge: winning the third consecutive race in Germany.

Enhanced by Subaru Tecnica International, the new WRX STI was described as being lighter and more stable through the turns by Japanese drivers Yoshida and Sasaki, basically what the car needed to be a contender at Nurburgring once more.

But what makes the new WRX STI better? Aerodynamics were the primal focus for Subaru, a larger underspoiler and new overfenders making the car better at cornering and handling at high speeds. Weight balance was also improved by moving the fuel tank and using new BBS forged magnesium wheels.

The Subaru Boxer engine will benefit from a new sequential gearbox, but only after Fuji testing is all over and the car is being shipped to Germany in April.

“In addition to refining aerodynamics and reducing the unspringing weight, we have made many small improvements for better performance of the car. I feel under pressure with a 3rd consecutive win at stake, but we will make sure to do our job without any mistakes to fully demonstrate the ability of the car and the team,” said Team Manager Ozawa.

Before taking the new 24 hours of Nurburgring challenge, Subaru will compete in a shorter four-hour race in the 3rd round of the VLN endurance series organised on the same track.
