The Swedish automaker is among the most adamant adepts at reshaping its entire strategy around an electrified range. It has only one pure EV, the XC40 Recharge, along with lots of plug-in hybrids and a couple of modular architectures. What else do they need, besides dropping ICE powerplants, to achieve their goals?
More electric vehicles, of course. Speculations have been running rampant this year around Volvo’s upcoming plans. The rumor mill gives us two possible EV champions – the C40 and XC100. The latter is being targeted as a larger brother to the XC90 crossover and should definitely arrive on the upcoming evolution of the Scalable Product Architecture (a.k.a. SPA 2).
But we’re still a while from seeing it come to life, so the rumor mill recently focused on what Volvo’s CEO, Hakan Samuelsson, had to say about the other EV product. Whether it will be called C40 (the “C” in the name was previously used to denote true coupe products), or a simpler XC40 Coupe, the new EV has the highest chances to be the model promised by the automaker for next March.
Based on all hints provided by Volvo so far, Spanish publication motor.es concluded the new electric vehicle will be a crossover-coupe derivative of the XC40 that would use the same CMA underpinnings. And a speculative rendering came naturally, especially since there’s already such an SUV out and about.
We're talking about the Lynk & Co 05, of course, the sleeker counterpart to the brand’s recent introduction to Europe, the 01. We already know that Volvo developed the CMA platform alongside Geely, so it’s not hard to imagine the Swedes would use the Lynk & Co 05 as a template for a model of their own. After all, a collaboration should always work both ways.
Going down that line of thought, the Spaniards reworked the 05 as a possible vision for the upcoming Volvo electric vehicle. Of course, they didn’t forget about incorporating all the necessary DNA traits – especially the front side of the XC40 Recharge and the customary Thor’s LED lights. The rear, meanwhile, is a bit more aerodynamic and stylish, probably at the expense of interior space.
