Upcoming Aston Martins May Use Smaller Engines

The downsizing trend is reaching each and every manufacturer on the market, and in the face of ever-stricter emissions regulations, as well as the constant consumer demand for ever-more efficient engines which perform just as good, or better than the larger engines they replace, even exclusive manufacturers, like Aston Martin will be looking to downsize.

Despite having traditionally used only V6, V8 and V12 powerplants, the ultra-exclusive British brand will be looking into smaller capacity engines in the not-too-distant future. Despite having reduced the emissions of their engines by 25% over the last six years, they are still way too high to be accepted in coming years, so according to their CEO, Ulrich Bez, “the job is not complete [. . .] Four or even three cylinders are possible. If the spirit of the times demands six cylinders, then it has to be looked at.”

So it will be interesting to observe Aston and similar manufacturers adapt to the changing times and needs of their clientele. Some luxury automakers may even die out if they don’t get compliant engines, and Aston Martin, being privately funded and in no way related to any manufacturer, with its former owner (Ford) retaining only 12.1% of its shares and having little influence on them - however, their Ford connection may allow them to purchase EcoBoost engines cheaper and somehow make them work on an Aston without ruining it. It is the future and everybody needs to adapt to stay afloat - Jaguar is already doing it!
