Another university in the US joins the car sharing party, after the University of Notre Dame announced a partnership with the company omnipresent on campuses' grounds, Zipcar. As usual, this means students and staff now have access to the services provided by Zipcar.
Four cars will be deployed by Zipcar on the University's grounds, located at the Old Juniper Rd Parking Lot between the B16 and D2 lots. They will be available to faculty and staff members ages 18 and older round the clock.
The fees charged for the service ($8 per hour and $66 per day) include gas (180 miles per day), insurance, reserved parking spots and roadside assistance. Zipcar also gives those interested the opportunity of having an annual membership issued to their name, for $35 (an extra $35 worth of free driving credit is applied towards the first month of driving).
"Students wanted a car-sharing service that helps to eliminate the need for them to bring their own cars to campus," said Erin Hafner, Programs Manager for the Office of Sustainability.
"Zipcar provides not only students, but the entire Notre Dame community, with a greater freedom to run errands, attend meetings, or get away for the weekend, without the hassle of owning a car."
If you have been following the expansion of Zipcar in the US, then you know by now that they are present in some 200 universities. Behind the obvious business advantages for Zipcar, car sharing hides a real benefit for the environment, as it helps reduce the number of vehicles present on the streets.
