Unimog U 20, Firefighting in Croatia

German carmaker Daimler announced the introduction of the Unimog U 20 vehicle in Croatia, joining firefighting service for the Croatian city of Sibenik as a TLF 10/25 tank water tender. The Germans have delivered today the first of a series of U 20s to be used on the narrow streets of the city.

The car features a 2.7 m long wheelbase (upon which sits a Albert Ziegler body), is 2.15 m wide and has a turning cycle of 12.6 m. its firefighting capabilities are enhanced by the 2,500 liter water tank and the equipment box hidden behind it.

Water is directed to where is needed via a centrifugal fire pump with a capacity of 1,000 l/min at 10 bar and a maximum 1,800 l/min at 8 bar, powered by the vehicle's engine. Additionally, it features rapid intervention equipment and a foam mixing system.

The Unimog is equipped with differential locks at the front and rear and permanent all-wheel drive, making ideal for use in forest fires as well.

"They are called for especially when the tank water tender has to negotiate steps in the historic old part of town to reach any of the very narrow streets. The large angles of approach and departure, 27 and 30 degrees respectively, and the portal axles, a typical feature of all Unimog model ranges, allow the U 20 to do this," Daimler explains the need for the Unimog in Sibenik.
