The SUV’s 2,179 cc turbocharged common-rail diesel unit has seen its power upgraded by 20 hp to a measured 180 hp at 3,164 rpm, while its torque has been increased by 52 lb-ft to 362 lb-ft at 2,346 rpm.
This was achieved by modifying the four-cylinder unit’s fuelling and turbo boost settings, operations performed after multiple sessions of dyno and road testing.
“In real world terms the Unichip performance advantage transforms the Freelander 2’s driving experience. The car feels livelier, more eager, smoother and pulls noticeably harder from low engine speeds thanks to the additional torque on tap. The extra torque not only translates into superior in-gear acceleration which enhances the Freelander’s overtaking abilities but also improves the car’s towing abilities,” stated the press release.
The upgrade was designed as a DIY fitment via the company’s “U-Connect” wiring loom. However, to ensure that the modification is safe, the “U-Connect” unit can only be remapped by one of the company’s agents.
“Designed as a DIY fitment via its plug and play ‘U-Connect’ wiring loom, the Unichip is fitted (and removed) in minutes. It leaves no electronic footprint and is ‘invisible’ to main dealers during servicing,” stated the press release.
Unichip claims that the extra performance doesn’t affect the engine’s fuel efficiency (this sits at 35 U.S. mpg), with drivers actually reporting a 5 to 10 percent consumption reduction in this area versus the standard powerplant.
