Unexpected Android Auto Error as Google Play Services No Longer Detected

Installing Android Auto should technically be a process that doesn’t take more than a couple of minutes, no matter if you use the Google Play Store or the standalone APK installer.

But as some discovered recently, using the standard installation procedure from the Google Play Store fails because the device is listed as unsupported, even if Android Auto was previously used on the same smartphone just fine in the past.

What’s worse is that an error is encountered when using the APK installer as well, only that this time the message is different and points to an issue with Google Play Services.

Google users explain that Android Auto fails with an error that reads “Android Auto requires one or more Google Play services that are not currently available. Please contact the developer for assistance.” Of course, Google Play services are installed and running properly, as all the other Google apps don’t return this error.

Is there anything you can do about this issue? Not really, but Google says it’s already investigating, only that it needs more information from users come across it.

Thanks for your reports. Our team would like to investigate this issue further. We have sent out individual emails to a few of you who have reported this issue recently back in April 9th, 2020. Please check your inbox for more information. It would be great if you could send us a bug report from your phone. Bug reports will help our engineers understand what's going on and to diagnose the root cause of the issue,” a member of the Android Auto team said this week.

The problem appears to be experienced mostly on LG devices, but there’s a chance other Android phones might be getting a similar error message. We’ll continue to monitor this bug report and let you know if and when Google comes up with a fix to restore Android Auto on the impacted devices.
