When one speaks of old Citroens from the late 1980s, early 1990s, sporty driving characteristics are not the first aspect that comes to mind. However, back in May of 1987, Citroen decided to boost the sporting appeal of its BX by intorucing the 19 GTi 16v, which featured a 1.9-liter naturally-aspirated engine which managed to produce a very impressive 160 hp, or 84 hp per liter – a very impressive feat in 1987.
The engine itself was based on that fitted to the Peugeot 205 GTi, and was also used in the Peugeot 405 Mi16. However, aside from the excellent engine, the BX 19 GTi 16V also featured firmer hydractive suspension and anti-roll bars, and it reportedly proved faster than 405 Mi16, during an ‘internal’ competition – it was also considerably more comfortable.
Later models got smoked rear lights and dark grey alloys, as well as different sideskirts and rear spoiler. To our eyes, at least, the BX 19 GTi 16V is one of the most iconic hot hatches in French car history, and we wish there were more of these great looking and driving cars on the road.
