After setting the internet abuzz with one hashtag, Renault today revealed one photo that's sure to get every hot hatch fan's pulse racing. It's a Megane RS with an Akrapovic exhaust system. Why? Because Nurburgring records, that's why…
This has to be the first time we got excited over the pipe of a French car we've known for ages. But the new system looks absolutely fantastic, especially with that nice carbon fiber tio on it.
We searched high and low and couldn't find any existing system on Akrapovic's website that fits the Megane RS. But there is one for the Golf 7 GTI that could serve as a reference. Since the two are basically class rivals and have similar 2-liter engines, the specs of that titanium exhaust are relevant. Power gained exclusively from the pipes is 8.6 kW (11.7 PS) and 16 Nm (11.8 lb-ft), with 5.6 kilograms (12.4 lbs) shed off the weight of the car.
It sounds like the updated Megane RS Trophy could make 280 PS, if not more. That number perfectly matches that of the SEAT Leon Cupra 280, the car that stole the Megane's crown and prompted Renault to develop this superior version.
Hopefully, Renault will prove our speculations right and show remote reservoir dampers for the car in a few days. They're expensive, but they dramatically improve handling. Race car stuff!
