Ultra-Scary High-Speed Crash, Rider Survives with a Broken Leg

I’m not even sure that when writing anything about this video, “lane splitting” should be mentioned. In my books, this has nothing to do with splitting lanes or filtering ahead through slower traffic, but instead has everything to deal with mindless riders speeding like a bullet onto a gruesome fate.

Now, as hard the impact was, the rider was only left with a broken foot. The first time I watched this video I thought I was about to see a fatal crash with bike, biker and the car all pulverized into a gruesome mess. It looks like this fellow was incredibly lucky, in spite of his exceedingly stupid riding style.

Some say that maybe the traffic slowed down quickly ahead of the poor rider, but I’m rather skeptic about such a scenario. I’ve seen a lot of riders speeding between the lanes, or between the leftmost car and the guard rails, and they all come down the same way, rear-ending some car in the line. Honestly, at this speed, making it unscathed from such a situation is rather wondrous, and not the other way around.

Remember the lane-splitting guidelines the California Highway Patrol published and the 10 mph (16 km/h) speed deemed to be safe when riding between the lanes? How about their advice to analyze traffic carefully as some other road users might not be aware of an incoming bike between the two lines of cars? Or the defensive riding motorcyclists should practice when between the lanes, even though they are moving ahead of traffic?

I’ve seen exactly nothing of the above in the video, just a guy speeding like a mad man in a place he should have not been using at all in the first place. The crash was a matter of “when and how hard”, and not a matter of “if”.
