It’s not every day that you get to feast your eyes on a BMW M1. That car is somehow similar to unicorns, especially to Bimmerheads around the world.
Now, if the standard M1 is as rare as a unicorn, imagine just how rare it is to spot a special-edition AHG model, like the one we posted in the adjacent photo gallery.
The story says that BMW built only 10 such models just before the M1 went out of production, back in 1981 and 1982. They are the rarest kind of birds in the M1 history and they have been known to sell at various auctions for prices in excess of $350,000.
So, what sets them apart from the rest of the M1s? The standard M1 used a 3.5-liter inline 6-cylinder engine making 273 HP. The AHG models have an improved racing engine that makes 350 HP thanks to a new special exhaust and a lot of careful engineering. Other add-ons include:
- Racing clutch
- New front spoiler
- Wider front and rear fenders
- New side skirts
- Special rear wing
- Height-adjustable racing suspension
- 3 piece BBS wheels
One such beauty is now up for sale on CarandClassic.co.uk for an asking price of €229,500 ($317,230). The car is located in the Netherlands and has only 14,000 km (8,700 miles) on the odometer. Furthermore, it was built in 1981 and, according to the ad, its engine was completely rebuilt just 500 km ago, the whole process costing a whopping €30,000 ($41,465).
