UK Police Assessing Ford Mustang GT Fastback Automatic, Could Join the Force

After it had failed the New South Wales police patrol vehicle tests in Australia, the Ford Mustang GT is offered another chance to join the force in the United Kingdom. The question is, will it overheat yet again after three minutes of pedal-to-the-metal action?

Only time will tell, but there’s no denying the Ford Mustang GT with Battenburg high-visibility livery is an attractive proposition for the British police. Displayed at the National Association of Police Fleet Managers trade fair, the police-grade Ford Mustang GT Fastback with the 6-speed automatic isn’t as mad as the Ariel Atom used by the Avon and Somerset Constabulary.

What it is, though, is a police car with lots of personality. The sound of the 5.0-liter V8 is enough to make baddies think twice before trying to run away from the police. Thanks to 410 bhp (416 PS) and a healthy shot of American muscle, the 2016 Ford Mustang GT Fastback with the 6R80 automatic transmission is able to sprint to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 4.8 seconds.

The Mustang also makes sense when you put your sensible pants on. A Ford spokesperson told the peeps at Motoring Research that “most forces already run Ford vehicles, so the support network is there and in-use backup will be simple to call upon – which isn’t always the case for high-performance vehicles.”

At the present moment, the most popular road policing car in the United Kingdom is the BMW 530d. Incidentally, the Bimmer costs more than the Mustang and its pricier to service, albeit it burns less fuel.

It remains to be seen if the police will grow fond of the Mustang and its loud and proud V8 engine, though. To be honest, this isn’t the most sophisticated police car around, but the thing is, you can’t get a cheaper V8-powered sports car with an automatic and high-speed pursuit credentials for less than £36,495.
