UK Parliament to Celebrate Button, Brawn GP F1 Titles

The British Parliament will likely pick a date to celebrate the incredible performance recorded by 29-year old Jenson Button and Brackley-based Brawn GP outfit, namely the conquering of both the drivers and constructors titles in the 2009 Formula One Championship. That is if the motion tabled by MP Richard Burden will pass the Parliament within the next few days.

Burden is a member of the Labour Party and an MP for Birmingham Northfield. The 55-year old Liverpudlian would like for Westminster to recognize the immense success experienced by the British outfit during the course of the ongoing season, having begun the 2009 championship thanks to a last-minute save from Honda.

That this House celebrates the success of Jenson Button and Brawn GP in winning the Formula 1 World Drivers and Constructors championships,” said the motion, as reported by British magazine Autosport.

Recognises the massive achievement that this represents as the Brawn team was only created at the start of 2009 following the withdrawal of Honda from Formula 1; pays tribute to all those who have contributed to this achievement, including the drivers, Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello, the leadership team of Ross Brawn and Nick Fry."

“All the current staff of Brawn GP and all those former Honda employees who are no longer with Brawn but whose work before 2009 also helped build the foundations for success this year; and notes that Brawn's success underlines the excellence of the UK's motorsport and performance engineering industries.

Earlier this month, Brawn GP's CEO Nick Fry admitted that the British government had a lot to do with the team's safeguarding following Honda's withdrawal.

This will not be received well in some quarters, because everyone loves knocking the British government. But I think it would be fair to say that our survival was helped a lot by the government and specifically Peter Mandelson and the department of business,” Fry told the latest edition of Top Gear magazine.
