The motoring press is not yet fully convinced what to make of the now Chinese-owned MG brand, and their one and only offering in the UK, the 6. The car looks decent, drives great and has an acceptable cabin. However, it lacked one very important sales-boosting element - a diesel engine.
SInce its launch last summer, all buyers have had to choose from is a 1.8-liter turbocharged petrol unit, connected to a manual five-cog gearbox. The engine made 160 hp and was good for launching the car from 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in 8.4 seconds, and has a claimed MPG rating of 35.6 on the combined cycle.

Now, though, the diesel is here, and judging from the specs it is quite a modern one. Developed and built in-house, by MG’s parent brand SAIC Motor, the 1.9-liter unit delivers 150 hp and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque, and the gearbox gains an additional gear over the petrol variant.

As one would expect, fuel consumption is much improved, over the petrol version, with 46.1 mpg (6.2 l/100km) in town, 59.0 mpg (4.8 l/100km) on the highway and 53.5 mpg (5.3 l/100km) combined, the diesel-powered MG6 is a far better proposition for both fleets and private buyers alike.

Company car drivers will finally be able to make sense of the MG6, now that it has a diesel, and considering its low BiK P11D prices, low insurange group ratings and low servicing and repair costs, it seems like the car is a genuine alternative to the norm. It is also quite a bit cheaper than most comparable diesels, while offering an engine, which on paper is just as good as the competition’s.

The car, equipped with the diesel, is available in four trim levels, called S, SE, TSE and Magnette. An S trim car costs £16,995, yet it still comes rather well equipped, wiht Electronic Stability Control, Hill Hold Assist, climate control, four electric windows, MP3 compatible audio system, with USB interface, as well as aux-in capability.
